My interest in exercise and nutrition began at the age of 13 in my own effort to improve my health and lifestyle. I began my program at 195lbs and reached my goal of 145lbs by the age of 15. I maintained my interest in diet and exercise throughout high school, constantly reading and experimenting with various exercise programs.
In 2008, I completed my BS in Exercise Science, with a focus in pre-physical therapy, from James Madison University. Countless hours were spent studying human/exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and human behavior. In addition, I spent many hours in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and cadaver labs, as well as physical therapy offices, learning the application of these sciences.
After graduation, I decided not to pursue my doctorate in physical therapy and turned my focus towards my passion of exercise science. However, the extra effort I put into my education, in order to get accepted into a doctorate program, gave me a higher understanding of the science and provided me the puzzle pieces necessary to draw hypothesis and help others improve their physical, mental, and emotional health. I plan to complete a Masters in Exercise Science in the near future.
Throughout my college career I also trained and competed in mixed martial arts, which is when I was introduced to CrossFit. I really enjoyed the intensity of the program and the excitement of learning important movements like Olympic lifting, ring training, and other functional training methods. I decided to attend a CrossFit Level 1 Certification and soon after completed the Coach’s level Prep Course. Developing a higher-level understanding of the functions of the human body allowed me to analyze CrossFit as a strength and conditioning program.
Based on my own research and studies, I have found many strong points in CrossFit while picking out some flaws that needed to be addressed. These flaws include the misuse of performance exercises, improper cues, and overall safety. It is my never ending duty to improve our CrossFit program and keep our members safe as they strive to reach their personal goals.
Today I train and compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and now use my exercise programming as a vehicle to maximize my sport performance, and overall health. Professionally, my greatest passion is helping others achieve their goals regardless of their starting point.
